Helical Drilling is looking to hire a civil/geotechnical co-op that is hard working, motivated, and a good problem solver. The candidate would report to the Design Center Manager and work alongside Design Engineers and project managers to design Geopier ground improvement systems to support a variety of structures across New England. Helical’s Design Engineers are involved in the project from initial conception and preliminary design all the way through final design and foundation construction/installation. It’s a great opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment and quickly gain valuable experience about geotechnical engineering and ground improvement, as well as how everything is tied together from estimating to sales to constructability concerns and more. Helical would provide all training, there’s no expectation for the candidate to have any ground improvement experience.
A prospective co-op will be responsible for working with Design Engineers to produce construction drawings and design calculations for a wide range of ground improvement projects. Typical projects include embankment and structural support, reducing settlement and/or increasing bearing capacity, shallow and deep foundation systems, and a wide variety of other unique and challenging projects. The prospective co-op will have the opportunity to become proficient with the following tasks associated with full cycle project management: Initial review of project feasibility, preliminary design, estimating, bid preparation, closing of the job, final design and submittal preparation, management through construction, final quality control documentation and project closeout.
This is a hybrid position: work from home Monday, Tuesday, Friday; in the office Wednesday and Thursday. Full work from home may be consider, though having a car and/or the ability to get to our office and local job sites will be a significant benefit to the student’s overall experience.
Primary Responsibilities:•Prepare design calculations using a variety of design spreadsheets and software.•Draft preliminary and final plans in AutoCAD 2D.•Assist in writing and preparing written reports and submittals that are presented to the client.•Oversee/observe modulus load tests and daily quality control on-site for various projects around New England.
Preferred Skills/Abilities:•Strong problem-solving skills. Highly motivated, fast learning, independent, and reliable.•Solid understanding of soil mechanics, consolidation theory, soil compressibility, and geotechnical engineering theories are preferred.•Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel. Ability to use AutoCAD 2D is preferred.•Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to multi-task.
