Job Search Strategies for a Competitive Market

Jan 27 • 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The job search after graduation works differently than finding a co-op. Employers are identifying candidates now, before you walk across the stage—and if you’re waiting until May to start seriously looking, you’re already behind the hiring cycles happening this semester. Many students default to applying online to 100+ positions and hoping something breaks through. That’s not a helpful strategy; it’s exhausting and ineffective.

This workshop gives you a framework for how the job search actually works and how to allocate your time across the three core strategies that get results. You’ll learn what percentage of your effort should go where (spoiler: it’s not all application portals), how to use targeted recruiting events and informational interviews strategically, and how to build experience while you’re searching so you’re continuously leveling up. We’ll break the process into manageable steps, and you’ll leave with an action plan, a job search tracker, AI prompts to identify target companies and contacts, and clarity on the Employer Engagement and Career Design resources available to you right now. You’ll also learn two approaches for staying resilient when the search takes longer than expected—because in this market, endurance matters as much as effort.

This workshop is for graduating seniors and graduate students who want to start their search the right way, not spend months realizing they’ve been doing it wrong. Bring questions about situations you’re facing if you have them—we’ll work through real scenarios and give you the tools to handle whatever comes next.
