Gene Therapy Purification ID 75497
UCB Gene Therapy Vector Core, located in Bedford, MA, is an end-to-end molecular biology and bioprocessing team with state-of-the-art laboratory tools and facilities to produce research grade adeno associated viral vectors (AAV). We support multiple therapeutic gene therapy programs by providing research grade AAV vectors globally to different functions within UCB, a multinational biopharmaceutical company, that is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. One very important aspect of this operation is purification of these vectors. A combination of non-scalable academic processes (like centrifugation) and industrial scalable processes like filtration and chromatography are used to purify AAV vectors. This is an opportunity to be placed on a real project under the guidance of experienced professionals and learn about the current bottlenecks in the gene therapy industry, get hands on training from experts in the field on advanced lab tools, and apply your learnings by directly contributing to projects with an ultimate goal of delivering potential cures to patients. You will have many opportunities to build your network, learn more about our organization through weekly meetings in the company, and participate in our team building activities.

Description: We are currently seeking a Co-op, passionate about new drug modalities, to join our Vector Production team in UCB Gene Therapy Vector Core during months July-December, 2023. Day-to-day responsibilities, upon proper training, can include activities related to AAV vectors production, performing cell cell/tissue culture work, harvesting, FPLC chromatography, ultracentrifugation and molecular biology bench work. Other activities may include coordination of sample submissions for analytical testing, assisting with data analysis and interpretation. The candidate will be expected to maintain accurate electronic records and effectively present their work at team meetings.

Qualifications: Candidates should be authorized to work in the U.S. and being currently enrolled in an accredited college or university seeking BS or MS degree in chemical engineering, biotechnology, molecular biology, biomedical engineering, biochemistry or a related discipline. Candidates need to have experience with basic lab techniques and are required to be physically on-site since this is a hands-on co-op assignment. Understanding the safety aspects and willingness to work in a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) lab is a requirement. Knowledge and experience with FPLC chromatography and ultracentrifugation is desired. The successful candidate will be a detail-oriented bench scientist with strong team player attitude, who is meticulous in data record keeping, with good communication skills and who is eager to learn new technologies.
