NU Talent Connect Guide for Success
What is Talent Connect?
Talent Connect is Northeastern University’s biannual recruiting event that brings together students and employers for meaningful career connections. This boutique event allows employers to engage with students in an open forum, where they can explore full-time, part-time, internship, and co-op opportunities. It provides a unique chance for employers to learn about students’ interests and qualifications, while students gain valuable insights into potential career paths. After these interactive sessions, employers can identify promising candidates and schedule interviews to meet their recruitment needs.
BEFORE THE EVENT
Profile Setup
Your NUworks profile is your first impression. Upload your most recent resume and set it as your Default Resume – this is critical, as employers cannot see your resume otherwise. Update your Academic Profile with your preferred job type (co-op/internship/full-time), industry interests, and current major/degree program. Enable “Include in Resume Books” and “Promote Me to Employers” in Privacy Settings.
Research
Access the Talent Connect employer list through the Talent Connect website. For each potential employer, review current job postings on both NUworks and company websites. Study their mission, values, and recent developments. Create a target list of employers whose opportunities match your skills and career goals.
Professional Introduction
Prepare a 30-60 second professional introduction that includes:
- Your name, year, and major
- Expected graduation date
- Position(s) of interest
- Relevant skills and experience
- Why you’re interested in the company
- A memorable detail about yourself
For example: “Hi, my name is [Name]. I’m a [year] student studying [major] at [university], graduating in [month/year]. I’m very interested in the [position/industry] because [specific reason]. In my experience with [specific project, internship, or leadership role], I developed skills in [relevant abilities], which I think align well with what [company name] values. I’d love to learn more about [specific aspect of the company or position]. Could you share what qualities you look for in candidates for this role?”
Technology Considerations
For virtual career fair sessions, test out your technology beforehand and have a backup device ready if possible. Allow video and audio access for your technology in NUworks. If you have difficulties, email [email protected] or call 617-373-2430.
DURING THE EVENT
Session Structure
At an in-person career fair, employers will be set up at booths where you can meet representatives and learn about their company. Plan ahead by identifying the employers you want to prioritize. If a booth has a long line, visit another employer you’re interested in and return later. This approach will help you make the most of your time at the event.
Virtual career fairs often feature group sessions where employers share information about their company and roles. You’re not expected to stay for the full duration, and you can attend multiple sessions, even if they overlap. If you have a scheduling conflict, still register—employers can see your interest through your registration, and you can join for the time you’re available.
Demonstrating Professionalism
Wear appropriate business casual attire and maintain a professional presence. Ask thoughtful questions about company culture, role responsibilities, team structure, growth opportunities, and current projects. Take notes during conversations and get proper contact information for follow-up.
AFTER THE EVENT
Follow-Up
Send thank-you emails within 24-48 hours. Include specific references to your conversation, reiterate your qualifications, connect to company goals/values, and clearly express continued interest. Consider connecting on LinkedIn with a personalized invitation. Keep track of all your interactions.
Next Steps
Apply to positions through NUworks when available and follow any specific application instructions given during sessions. Update your materials based on feedback received and be prepared for potential interview requests.
Additional Information for International Students
- Talent Connect, like most U.S. career fairs, does not conduct interviews or extend job offers on-site. Its purpose is to engage briefly with recruiters (4-5 minutes) to discuss opportunities you’ve identified through NUworks or organizational research/job postings. Employers will follow up later with selected candidates for interviews.
- Talent Connect publishes which organizations are open to CPT/OPT, please see our website and explore these organizations for roles that might be a fit for you.
- Don’t ask about CPT/OPT, H-1B, or visa assistance at Talent Connect. Focus on showcasing your fit for the role during your 4-5 minute conversation, rather than bringing up visa-related barriers. Before the event, use tools like myvisajobs or GoinGlobal to identify employers who have previously hired international candidates for your desired roles. Keep the conversation positive and focused on your strengths.
- Engage with small to medium-sized organizations that may not appear on myvisajobs or GoinGlobal but could consider CPT/OPT or H-1B. Focus on fit and interest and decide later which opportunities align best with your goals.
- While we recommend not bringing up your visa status at Talent Connect, be prepared with a clear, concise answer about your employment eligibility if asked. A practiced, easy-to-understand response will make a positive impression and increase your chances of being considered by employers.
- Cultural differences can impact success at Talent Connect, from introductions to attire and networking. To prepare, attend the International Student Job Search lab, the career fair panel, OGS OPT/CPT and Career Design sessions, view recordings, and other Career Design programs to optimize your success.
- Visit the Career Studio to customize your strategy and practice your introduction.
