Writing Cover Letters That Help Get You the Interview

May 4 • 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

You’ve customized your resume, so why bother with a cover letter? Because when they’re separated in the application process—and they often are—a generic or AI-generated cover letter kills your chances before anyone reads your resume. A cover letter isn’t a summary of what you’ve already done. It’s your elevator pitch on paper: 2-3 paragraphs in your own voice that connect your Co-op or other experience and what you’ve learned about yourself to the specific job and company you’re targeting.
This workshop shows you how to build a cover letter the same way you build a customized resume—with intention and strategy. You’ll learn what a cover letter is actually supposed to accomplish, how to make it sound like you (not like a template or written by ChatGPT), and how to present a unified narrative that makes employers want to interview you. We’ll cover the key elements of an effective cover letter, give you Career Design resources to refine your approach, and share tips for spotting job search scams along the way. By the end, you’ll have the building blocks to write a cover letter that reflects your unique value and keeps you connected to your resume throughout the process.
This workshop is for graduating seniors and graduate students who are ready to apply strategically. Bring questions about situations you’re facing—we’ll work through real scenarios and give you the tools to handle whatever comes next.
